If you’re ready to find your dream job, read on. While finding the ideal job may not happen overnight, when you’re ready to make the leap there’s more than one way to get there. In this post I share five ways you can find your perfect role.
Develop your network
Having a good network can be helpful in more ways than one when you’re on the hunt for your dream job. To begin with, it can be a good way to hear about opportunities. It can also put you in touch with people who can assist you to reach your objective and be a source of referrals or introductions to organisations aligned with your goals. For these reasons, it’s important to ensure you make time to develop your network.
Effective networking includes both strengthening your current connections and making new ones. Look for ways to connect with people that can support you in securing a dream role. It might be speaking with people who have done your dream job to see how they got there. Maybe it’s connecting with senior people in your industry. Find the events, platforms and organisations that will take you in the direction you want and develop a strong, active network to support your career aspirations.
Follow employers on social media
With so much access to information about organisations available online, following employers on social media is one of the easiest things you can do to help you find your dream job. Choose a few organisations you are interested in working for or that are leaders in your field. Then pay attention to what they share and contribute to on social media.
Not only is this one way to hear about vacancies with employers, it can also be a great way to get a feel for the organisation, their activities and their values. Look for opportunities to connect with organisations you are interested in and consider whether anyone in your network might be able to introduce you to key people. While social media alone might not land you your dream job, you could be surprised by what benefits can be found on your favourite platforms.
Showcase your skills and experience
Being able to showcase your skills and experience to recruiters and potential employers is essential for landing your dream job. A big part of this is a capacity to present a compelling application. That means you need a well-presented resume. You also need a cover letter tailored to the specific position you’re applying for. Back this up with solid interview skills and you’ll be well on the way to your ideal role.
However, there are other ways that you can showcase your skills and experience. One way is on social media. Another is through submitting a profile to job database websites. Displaying your skills and demonstrating your expertise on these platforms could help opportunities reach you. Check your settings to see whether you can make your profile available to recruiters and employers looking to hire. You might just find that your perfect opportunity comes to you.
Stay informed about opportunities
Of course, your preferred role might not be available right now. What then? If you’re ready for your dream job, then you need to keep on top of current opportunities. There are lots of ways to do this. For instance, you could follow employers and recruiters on social media or sign up to job alerts. You could also set up saved searches on your favourite jobs databases.
Talk to a recruiter or ask people in your network about potential openings. Depending on your situation, you might want to let people know that you’re open to opportunities. If you do this, try to be specific about what you’re looking for and let people know how to get in touch with you if something suitable comes along.
Connect with a recruiter
Another way to find your dream job is by connecting with recruiters. Because we’re recruiting every day, we can offer insights on the current job market and fresh perspectives that you might not have considered in your job search. Even if you’re not applying for a role with us, we offer a tailored job alert to keep you informed about new roles and you can also subscribe to our newsletter to get informative articles to help you progress your career.
If you are interested in a role being advertised, it can pay to get in touch with recruiters by phone before submitting your application. Introduce yourself and let them know you are keen. Maybe find out a bit more about the role and indicate what skills and experience you can bring. Establishing some rapport over the phone will help your application to stand out. Even if you don’t get that role, making a positive impression means a recruiter is more likely to approach you with similar opportunities in the future.
As a recruiter, connecting talented candidates with dream jobs is what I do. I hope this post has given you some ideas for how you can find your ideal role.
