Generation Z (popularly characterised as Gen Z) are those born between late 90’s and early 2010’s. They are the new cohort of employees. As a digital native generation, reports suggest that Gen Z adhere to a completely different set of rules than those compared to their predecessors. They are slowly taking over the workforce, demanding a workplace tailored to their needs and rejecting places that do not provide a good work/life balance (and apparently, that is scaring their predecessors!).
As employers, it is important to learn how to welcome Gen Z to your workforce! Here are some key insights.
Gen Z Prefer ‘Meaningful Work’
According to research, 42% of Gen Z workers say that they would take pay cut if it meant working a job that makes a difference in the world. Gen Z are more involved with the world affairs than their predecessors. As a result, 49% of Gen Z actively steer away from a workforce that does not align with their values. Companies with ethical practices, such as environmental sustainability initiatives, charity campaigns etc that aligns with their values are highly regarded.
Inclusive Work Culture
An inclusive work culture is on top of the priority list when Gen Zs look for a new job. This means a workforce that is open, cooperative, and fair as well as provides autonomy in terms of work along with personal development opportunities. Diversity is seen as a green flag. One thing that both Gen Z and millennials can agree on is mental health days. Self-care is an important aspect of life and workplaces are starting to realise this. Slowly but steadily, practices such as hybrid working arrangements and mental health days are being adopted that promotes a great work/life balance!
Shorter Application Process?
Another factor Gen Zs are motivated by is a shorter application process. A 4-stage interview process? Forget it! However, at the same time, reports cite that ‘Job Hopping’, i.e., quickly changing jobs is the norm for Gen Z. While understanding that shorter application processes may invite talented Gen Z, it may also assist the said talent in hopping through multiple jobs at the sight of a slight bump!
